Old Nepalese manuscript: janme. FOLIO 6 of the Old Nepalese manuscript ends here. Since EHJ did not have access to fol. 7 and 8 (i.e. the 7th and 8th of the 55 palm-leaves of the old Nepalese manuscript), from here to 2.35 he relied upon EB Cowell's text, which was based on three manuscripts that preserved the transcript which Amṛtananda took from fol. 7 and 8 before those leaves were lost.

Cowell: kasya.

Cowell's manuscripts have kṛtasyākṛtasyeva.

Cowell: naikātmanidhīn avāpi. Amended based on Kern's conjecture.

Cowell: abhūṣitair. Kern: ābhūṣitair.

Cowell's manuscripts have cāptiḥ.

Cowell: tadāsya.

Cowell's manuscripts have udagra-vatsā-sahitā.

Cowell': sva.

Cowell: nāśam.

Cowell: maṇḍitāṅgaḥ.

Cowell: samyak.

Cowell: caivauṣadhayo. EHJ noted that the three evas in Cowell's second line were hardly possible.

EHJ noted that the difference between Cowell's text and the Tibetan translation is so great in the 4th pāda that EHJ thought that the old Nepalese manuscript must have been only partly legible when Amṛtānanda copied it, causing him to insert a guess of his own. On the basis of the Tibetan translation, therefore, EHJ amended garbha-dharāś-ca to kāla-vaśena, “in due time.”

Cowell: yac-ca pratibhvo vibhave 'pi śakye. Cowell's original manuscript had pratibhyo; he notedI read pratibhvo, though it should be pratibhuvo.”

Cowell: cāyam.

Cowell: nāśo vadho. EHJ's amendment, based on the Tibetan translation, is also supported by the Chinese translation, which has 無慢, “there was no insolence/laziness.”

Cowell: abhitaś.

Cowell's manuscript has purāny araṇyasya. Cowell amended to purāny araṇyāni, following the conjecture of Gawronski and Sovani.

Cowell queried whether kaluṣaḥ should be amended to kaluṣaṁ. EHJ's Sanskrit text has kaluṣaḥ but in a footnote to his translation EHJ thought that Cowell was probably right in conjecturing kaluṣaṁ.

EHJ amended Cowell's rāja-sutasya tasya to rāja-kulasya saṁpat (realization/fulfillment of the royal line) and added in a footnote to his translation: “Cowell's text in a is so weak and differs so much from the Tibetan translation that evidently the old Nepalese manuscript was partly illegible here. I accordingly accept the Tibetan translation's reading, which ... explains how the old Nepalese manuscript was misread.” The Chinese translation, however, though it is generally by no means reliable, does appear to support Cowell's text here. 今王生太子 (“Now the king-begotten prince...”) mirrors Cowell's text almost word for word.

EHJ amended Cowell's tato 'vināśāya to tato nivāsāya.

Both EB Cowell and EHJ have ratnāvalīḥ (accusative, plural). Taking ācakrire in the 4th pāda to be passive, however, requires ratnāvaliḥ (nominative, singular).

EBC and EHJ have sagarbhāḥ (accusative).

EBC and EHJ have prayuktā (accusative).

EBC and EHJ have rathakāṁṣ-ca (accusative).

EBC and EHJ have haimān (accusative). This sandhi form (for -āḥ + ā-) looks somewhat suspect as it does not seem to appear in Saundara-nanda or elsewhere in Buddhacarita. On the other hand, to take ācakrire as transitive (i.e., ātmanepada; the middle voice) without any clear specification of who the subject was, appears even less characteristic of Aśvaghoṣa – who does not generally leave loose ends dangling. EHJ himself was aware of the problem; see following note.

Cowell also had hiraṇ-mayā hasti-mgāśvakāś-ca (nominative). EHJ put this into the accusative (hiraṇ-mayān hasti-mgāśvakāṁś-ca), and noted: “The words in this verse must be in the same case as in 21, so I have put them all into the accusative. But ācakrire might be passive and then all should go into the nominative.”

Cowell's manuscripts have rathāś-ca gāvo vasana-prayuktā tantrīś-ca. Cowell amended to rathāś-ca gāvo vasana-prayuktā gantrīś-ca. EHJ noted that “Cowell's text is too much at variance with T [the Tibetan translation] to be authentic” and amended to rathāṁś-ca go-putraka-saṁprayuktān putrīś-ca.

EBC and EHJ both have citrāh (nom./acc. pl. f.). The amendment is based on taking tantrīḥ (a string by which calves were tethered) as nominative singular feminine.

Two of the manuscripts omit the 2nd pāda. EHJ amended to vayaś-ca kaumāram-atītya samyak saprāpya kāle pratipatti-karma, “He passed through infancy and in course of time duly underwent the ceremony of initiation.”

CSL: asitād.

Cowell: vṛddhir bhavac chākyakulasya rājñāḥ. Two of the manuscripts omit the 4th pāda.

Cowell: śīla-saṁyutāt.

Cowell: tulyābhidhānāṁ. Two of the manuscripts have tāmābhidhānāṁ.

Cowell: athāparaṁ bhūmi-pateḥ priyo yaṁ, which appears in the margin of one of the manuscripts. All of the manuscripts in their text have pūyāpareṇa, so that the pāda is six syllables short. In a note to his translation, EHJ asserted: “The restoration of a is certain, cp. Jāt, xix, 19, vidyotamānaṁ vapuṣā śriyā ca.”

Cowell: ca.

Cowell: hy-ādiśati.

Cowell: hārair (amended in one manuscript to hāvair).

Cowell: tataś-ca.

FOL 9 STARTS HERE.

Old Nepalese manuscript (much rubbed): bhāṣ[?]ura cāṅgir[?]asādhidai[?de?]vaṁ.

Old Nepalese manuscript: kṛṣanañ ca.

Old Nepalese manuscript: ātmañjaṇ ca.

Old Nepalese manuscript: atatva

Old Nepalese manuscript: hriyāsakan.

According to EHJ, the old Nepalese manuscript has vyavahāra-labdhaṁ. In Cowell's text this is rendered 'vyavahāra-labdhaṁ – i.e. avyavahāra-labdhaṁ (“obtained without doing”). EHJ amended to vyavahāra-suddhaṁ (“free of doing”; EHJ: “purity of justice”).

The old Nepalese manuscript, and Cowell's manuscripts (originally copied therefrom), have yathāvat. EHJ amended to yathāvat based on Formichi's conjecture.

Old Nepalese manuscript: -paraśvavena.

Old Nepalese manuscript: dvi-darppam. EBC amended to dvi-darpam and translated as “double pride,” while noting that Professor Kielhorn would suggest dviḍ-darpam (“enemy pride”).

Old Nepalese manuscript: t[?]ivarggaṁ.

Old Nepalese manuscript: nājīghanat.

Old Nepalese manuscript: caitaṁ.

Old Nepalese manuscript: ahāsīṁś-cira.

Old Nepalese manuscript: guṇavāndhavanti.

Old Nepalese manuscript: rajāṁsv.

Old Nepalese manuscript: na cācikīṣīt.

Old Nepalese manuscript: na cāvidhakṣīd. EHJ amended, based on Finot's conjecture, to na cāvivakṣīd. Cowell: na cādididhakṣīd. Kielhorn: na cābibhakṣīd. EHJ notes that the verb in d is unceratin but avivakṣīt, from vah, corresponds fairly with the Tibetan translation and is the soundest paleographically.

Old Nepalese manuscript: samātmake.

Old Nepalese manuscript: puta(?tra?)sya. Hartmann's fragment, which begins here, confirms the reading putrasya.

Old Nepalese manuscript/EBC: mamaiva. EHJ amended to mameva. CSL: mameva.

Old Nepalese manuscript: rājarṣabhānāṁ.

Old Nepalese manuscript: ayaṣṭaḥ.

Old Nepalese manuscript: ajajvaliṣṭātha.

Old Nepalese manuscript: jajāya putraḥ-sthitaye (with mark over visarga to show error).

Old Nepalese manuscript: vimamarṣa. Both EHJ and EBC amended to vimamarśa.

Old Nepalese manuscript: samaṁ. Both EHJ and EBC amended to śamaṁ.

Salomon notes that the correspondence with the numbering in EHJ's text may indicate that EHJ's suspicions about the authenticity of BC2.15, which is absent from the Chinese translation, are not justified (unless BC2.15 were an interpolation which was introduced into the text at a very early stage, before the separation of the Nepalese and Central Asian recensions).

The old Nepalese manuscript, as EHJ read it, had ācakāṁkṣaṁ. EHJ amended to ācakāṅkṣa. Hartmann's fragment has -kāṁkṣe. Salomon notes that “the final anusvāra is very likely a miscopying for the diacritic vowel e, a common error, so that we can assume that the Central Asian reading, i.e., ācakāṅkṣe, is the original one and that EHJ's emendation here was probably erroneous.”

Old Nepalese manuscript: niyātāṁ. EBC also has nipātaṁ (presumably as a result of amendment by Amṛtananda).

Old Nepalese manuscript: katha.

The numeral 5 marks the end of Hartmann's fragment.

Old Nepalese manuscript: ātma-saṁsthā. EBC accepted ātma-saṁsthāḥ [modifying bhūmi-pālāḥ], but queried ātma-saṁsthām [modifying śriyam]. EHJ amended to ātma-saṁsthām.

Old Nepalese manuscript: viṣayeṣv amuñcan. EBC amended to viṣayeṣv amuñcat. EHJ noted that he did not follow EBC's reading because the collocation of perfect (rarakṣa) and imperfect (amuñcat) was awkward.
