Old Nepalese manuscript/EBC/EHJ: pṛṣodarāś ca. Based on the Tibetan translation, EHJ queried mahodarāś ca. The Chinese translation 或大腹長身 means “in some cases, great bellies, long bodies.” Windisch: kṛśodarāś ca.

Old Nepalese manuscript: ajāmusakthā. EBC: ajāsu saktā. EHJ amended based on the conjecture of Luders and Kern.

Old Nepalese manuscript: draṣtrā-.

Old Nepalese manuscript: kabandha-hastā. EBC: kabaṁdhahastā. EHJ, based on the Tibetan translation, amended to karaṅka-vaktrā. EHJ noted that the exact equivalent of the Tibetan translation was kaṅkāla-vaktrāḥ (“with faces of skeletons”) but he preferred karaṅka-vaktrāḥ, as closer paleographically to the old Nepalese manuscript and as apparently indicated by the Chinese translation. EHJ amended the text accordingly and translated “with skulls for faces.” This may have been one of those relatively rare instances when reliance on the Tibetan translation led EHJ astray. The Chinese translator's 無頭 (headless) as I read it supports the old Nepalese manuscript's reading of kabandha (a headless trunk) much more strongly that it supports EHJ's conjectured kaṅkāla (skeleton) or karaṅka (skull).

From here begins Hartmann's fragmentary manuscript b. According to Salomon, this manuscript is a palm leaf written in Indian “Gupta script” of about the sixth century, containing (amongst other material) parts of BC13.28-29, 58-59, 67-68, and 70-72. This manuscript was found at Qyzyl, but presumably came from India.

EBC: dhūryamāṇo.

Old Nepalese manuscript: durmmarṣaṇasyaiva.

Old Nepalese manuscript: tasthau nayaty eva. EBC: tasthur nayaty eva. EHJ amended, based on the conjecture of Kern and Bohtlingk, to tasthur nabhasy eva. EHJ noted, however, that there is nothing to chose between nabhasi and viyati, except that Aśvaghoṣa uses the former rather oftener.

Old Nepalese manuscript: so prāpta-kālo. EBC: so 'prāpta-kālo. EBC: so 'prāpta-kāmo.

Old Nepalese manuscript: vidrudruvuś.

EBC: ārttāḥ.

Old Nepalese manuscript: ganebhyo.

Old Nepalese manuscript / EBC: sasāra. Bohtlingk: mamāra. Kern: śaśāra. EHJ amended to śaśāda, based on his own conjecture.

EBC: viśiṣṭarūpaṁ.

Old Nepalese manuscript / EBC: dṣṭvārṣaye.

Old Nepalese manuscript: jvalana.

Old Nepalese manuscript: vyavasām eṣaḥ (one syllable short). Hartmann's fragmentary mansucript b has ...hyādhyavasāyam eṣaḥ,

Old Nepalese manuscript:.va. Hartmann's fragmentary manuscript b has ….sya dayā prajā[su].

Old Nepalese manuscript: nocchāsyati.

Old Nepalese manuscript: tamāsy ahatveva sahasra-rasmiḥ. Hartmann's fragmentary mansucript b (Cat. no 24) has … [ta]māṁsy ahatveva sahasra-raśmiḥ. Thus, even though EHJ's amendments amount to nothing more than corrections of typos, they are confirmed as accurate by the Central Asian manuscript.

Old Nepalese manuscript: nāsya sādhyan. EBC: nāsya sādhyaṁ.

EBC: ārttaṁ.

Old Nepalese manuscript: śramena.

Old Nepalese manuscript: praṇaṣṭe.

EBC: mahāndha-kārair.

Old Nepalese manuscript: mahoghe.

Old Nepalese manuscript: pravattaḥ.

Old Nepalese manuscript / EBC: cinnayet.

Kern: nu.

Old Nepalese manuscript: verya-.

Old Nepalese manuscript: dharmma-pradātā (two syllables short).

Old Nepalese manuscript: nopapannāṁ (anusvara added later).

Hartmann's fragmentary manuscript a begins here, with ...m[o]kṣa[h].... and continues to the 1st pāda of BC14.1.

Hartmann's manuscript a has yathai[va] pūrve munayas ta..... Hartmann's manuscript b has yathaiva pūrvvaṁ munayas tathaiva. See Salomon.

Old Nepalese manuscript: nābhi vvasudhā.

Old Nepalese manuscript: paramena.

Hartmann's manuscript b has ...t..na sa pradeśo.

Old Nepalese manuscript: veśaṁ samādhe vviṣa yo sya (gap for two missing characters). EBC: veśaṁ samādher viṣayo hitasya. EHJ: vegaṁ samādher viṣaheta yo 'sya. Hartmann's manuscript a has vegaṁ samādher viṣa...... Hartmann's manuscript b has vegaṁ samādher vviṣaheta yo 'sya. Hartmann's manuscripts thus perfectly confirm EHJ's conjectures.

Old Nepalese manuscript: kṛthā (visarga added above line) sokam.

Old Nepalese manuscript: visrambhituṁ.

Old Nepalese manuscript: śrīś cale pade kiṁ padam at(?bh?)yupemi. EBC: śrīś cale pade kiṁ padam abhyupaiṣi. EHJ: śrīś cale pade vismayam abhyupaiṣi. Hartmann's fragment has: ca[l]e pade kiṁ [m]... . Salomon noted that EHJ's emending to vismayam can now be seen (on the basis of Hartmann's fragment) to be one of the few places where EHJ's intuition failed him. Weller in his edition of the Tibetan translation of BC had conjectured that ḥgro ci = kiṁ madam. EHJ noted Weller's conjecture but didn't follow it. Thus, as noted by Hartmann, Weller seems to have anticipated the correct reading, as confirmed by the later discovery of Hartmann's fragment. This chain of events, then, tends to confirm that the Tibetan translation is a reliable source.

Old Nepalese manuscript: prekṣa.

Hartmann's manuscript b has [ka]mpyatām.

Old Nepalese manuscript: matodyamaḥ. Hartmann's manuscript b has jagāma māro vimanā hatodyam[a]. This pāda is also covered in part by Hartmann's manuscript a, which has ...n[o ha]...y.maḥ.

Old Nepalese manuscript/EBC: vihanyase. EHJ amended to vihanyate, based on Bohtlingk's conjecture. This conjecture was confirmed by Hartmann's manuscript b, which has ..te.

Old Nepalese manuscript: gata-paharṣā.

Hartmann's manuscript b has pāṣāṇa-kaṭiṅgara-drumāḥ.

Hartmann's manuscript b has [sapari]ṣakte, whereas the old Nepalese manuscript / EHJ / CSL have saparipakṣe. EBC: saparapakṣe. Hartmann noted that the reading in his manuscript b is preferable on linguistic grounds. EHJ himself had noted (in a footnote to his English translation) that “Paripakṣa does not occur elsewhere; those who do not like it can choose between saparirakṣe, saparivāre, and saparibarhe.”

Hartmann's manuscript b has jayati ca vita[maske], whereas the old Nepalese manuscript has jitatamaske. Hartmann notes that the reading in his manuscript b is preferable on stylistic grounds.

EBC: mahārṣau.

Hartmann's manuscript a has vipāpmā, whereas both the old Nepalese manuscript and Hartmann's manuscript b have sahāsā. The Tibetan translation also indicates sahāsā. Salomon notes that this is the only place where the Old Nepalese manuscript and Hartmann's manuscript b agree against Hartmann's manuscript a. Hartmann notes that vipāpmā is inferior on stylistic grounds.

Old Nepalese manuscript: cakāse.

Old Nepalese manuscript: puṣpa-varṣa.

Old Nepalese manuscript: praśeduḥ.

Old Nepalese manuscript: -vṛṣṭaye.

The Old Nepalese manuscript, the copies thereof used by EBC, and the Tibetan translation, all include this verse here. Judging it to be spurious, EHJ relegated it to a footnote in his Sanskrit text, and did not translate it into English. The verse (putatively BC12.73) reads, in the versions of EBC and EHJ:

tathāpi pāpīyasi nirjite gate diśaḥ praseduḥ prababhau niśākaraḥ |

divo nipeturbhuvi puṣpavṣṭayo rarāja yoṣeva vikalmaṣā niśā ||

EBC translated the verse: “When the wicked one thus fled vanquished, the different regions of the sky grew clear, the moon shone forth, showers of flowers fell down from the sky upon the earth, and the night gleamed out like a spotless maiden.”

EHJ's intuition again seems to be confirmed by the discovery of Hartmann's fragment, which does not include the verse.

Old Nepalese manuscript: mahā-kāvye 'śvaghoṣa-kte.

Hartmann's manuscript b has trayodaśamaḥ.
